Hyundai Kona is a front- or all-wheel drive crossover of a subcompact class, combining stylish design, modern interior and "motley" range of power units. The car, named after one of the coastal areas of the main Hawaiian island and debuted in Milan, is aimed primarily at a young audience with an active lifestyle, being an image model for the markets of Europe, the USA and South Korea ...

For the first time Hyundai Kona was shown to the world community in June 2017 during a special presentation in Goyang and, almost simultaneously, at the show in Milan ... a few months later the "classic automobile" debut of the five-door took place at the International Frankfurt Motor Show.

In September 2020, the Koreans presented a modernized crossover, to which the exterior and interior were "refreshed", the engine range was "shaken up" a bit, and also separated new options that were not available before.

Outwardly, Hyundai Kona "flaunts" an attractive, extravagant, modern, sporty and well-proportioned appearance, overflowing with interesting, but quite appropriate design solutions.

The length of the subcompact SUV is 4165 mm, and its width and height are 1800 mm and 1550 mm, respectively. The wheelbase of the car is 2600 mm, and its ground clearance varies from 158 to 170 mm, depending on the modification.

Interior

The interior of the Hyundai Kona, although tailored according to modern patterns, looks overly strict, especially in comparison with the exterior. At the same time, the five-door inside can boast of impeccable ergonomics, solid finishing materials and good build quality.

The interior of the car is quite suitable for accommodating the driver and his four companions, but in the second row you should definitely not count on an excess of free space.

The trunk of the crossover in its normal state is able to accommodate 361 liters of luggage, and with the second row folded down - 1143 liters.

Specifications

For Hyundai Kona, the widest, and even the "mismatched" range of power plants is declared:

  • Petrol versions rely on in-line four-cylinder naturally aspirated and turbocharged engines with a volume of 1.0-2.0 liters, which generate 121-200 horsepower and 172-265 Nm of torque.
  • Diesel modifications are supplied with a 1.6-liter "turbo four", developing 115-136 hp. and 275-320 Nm of peak thrust.
  • The hybrid version includes a 1.6-liter gasoline engine (105 hp and 147 Nm), a 43.5-horsepower electric motor (170 Nm), a 6-band "robot" with two clutches and a lithium-polymer battery with a capacity of 1.56 kW / h , and its total power is 141 hp. and 265 Nm of torque.
  • The crossover is also offered in two electrical versions:
    • "In the base" the front axle is turned by a motor with a return of 135 hp. and 395 Nm, which is "powered" by a 39.2 kWh battery (power reserve - 300 km);
    • and on the Long Range version - a unit that produces 204 hp. and 395 Nm and combined with a 64 kW / h battery ("range" - 470 km).

As for traditional engines, they work in conjunction with a 6-speed "mechanics" or a 7-band "robot" with two clutches, as well as with two types of drive - front or full (with a multi-plate rear axle clutch).

Design features

At the heart of the Hyundai Kona is a new platform designed specifically for this subcompact crossover (at least that's what the South Korean company claims), with a monocoque body that's more than half made of high-strength steel.

At the front, the car is equipped with an independent MacPherson-type suspension, and the design of the rear axle depends on the version: front-wheel drive has a torsion bar, and all-wheel drive has a multi-link system.

By default, the five-door has an active electric power steering, as well as disc brakes on all wheels (ventilated at the front).

Options and prices

In the Russian market, Hyundai Kona is not officially sold, but in European countries it is in good demand. As for the cost, for example, in Germany for a "pre-reform" car in 2020 they ask for a minimum of 17,750 euros (≈1.5 million rubles), the hybrid version cannot be bought cheaper than 27,781 euros (≈2.4 million rubles), and the version will have to pay from 33,971 euros (≈3 million rubles).
