Chevrolet Cobalt is a front-wheel drive sedan of the subcompact class (aka "B-segment" by European standards), which has an unpretentious design, but an ergonomic and practical interior and a time-tested technical "stuffing" (and all this for relatively affordable money) ...

Its main target audience is not particularly sophisticated middle-aged and older family men, for whom practicality is much more important than beauty and cheap "show-off" ...

The Brazilian branch of GM, by 2011, independently developed its own vision of the state employee. The project was named Chevrolet Cobalt, and as a concept, it was first presented in the summer of 2011 in Buenos Aires, and by the end of the same year went on sale in South America.

Already in 2012, this four-door made its way to the Russian market, but at the end of 2015 it left our country due to the difficult economic situation ... but in the summer of 2020 it returned to Russia, moreover, “in almost the same form” (despite the fact that in South America, Cobalt has undergone significant modernization by 2015).

The appearance of the Chevrolet Cobalt for the CIS markets turned out to be quite distinctive, but boring. The front part with large almond-shaped headlights, an immodest size false radiator grille, a bumper with an additional air duct and "cannons" for foglights is made in the corporate style of the brand. Only the disproportionately large dimensions of the headlights and the radiator grille introduce a certain imbalance in the appearance of this car.

The sides of the body with a high waist line (small windows), an almost flat roof, powerful rear pillars, round wheel arches and a lean trunk look fresh, without a hitch, however, the stamping in the lower part of the doors dilutes the mood, but its configuration seems to be asking to be protected by a plastic lining ...

The stern with a huge trunk lid is discordant with the "child size" bumper and rear lighting, which is made in the style of "Corsa sedan".

Size and weight

In length "Cobalt" is 4479 mm, and its width and height reach 1735 mm and 1514 mm, respectively. The wheelbase of the car is 2620 mm, and its ground clearance does not exceed 160 mm.

The curb weight of the three-volume tank varies from 1097 to 1168 kg, depending on the modification.

Interior

The interior trim of the Chevrolet Cobalt is simple in appearance and is tailored exclusively from budget materials, but at the same time it is distinguished by thoughtful ergonomics and neat assembly. A weighty three-spoke "steering wheel", an "elegant" digital instrument cluster with a separate dial tachometer and a laconic front panel carrying an audio system unit and three air conditioning knobs - although inside the sedan does not shine with design delights, it looks attractive overall.

The seats in the Chevrolet Cobalt also migrated from the Aveo, the front ones with a bright anatomical shape and pronounced lateral support not only for the cushion, but also for the back of the chair.

The back row pillow is molded for two passengers, and there are two headrests, the third seated person will be uncomfortable. In the second row of legroom with a margin, passengers of average height will not feel cramped.

The trunk of a subcompact sedan is to the envy of many: it not only has a wide opening, neat upholstery and hinges that do not interfere too much, but also a really impressive volume of 545 liters.

The back of the rear sofa fits in a pair of unequal sections, however, in this case, a flat platform does not work, but you can additionally fold or remove the pillow. In the niche under the raised floor there is a full-size spare wheel and the necessary tools.

Specifications

The second generation Chevrolet Cobalt is armed with an atmospheric petrol "four" with a working volume of 1.5 liters with a cast-iron cylinder block, an aluminum block head with two camshafts, distributed fuel injection and a 16-valve timing chain with a chain drive, which develops 105 horsepower at 5800 rpm / minute and 134 Nm of torque at 4000 rpm.

By default, the three-volume is equipped with a 5-speed "mechanics" and a front-wheel drive transmission, but as an option it can be equipped with a 6-band hydromechanical "automatic".

Speed, dynamics and consumption

The dynamics of the sedan does not depend on the type of gearbox - it is, in any case, 11.7 seconds "to the first hundred", and the maximum speed is 170 km / h.

But in terms of fuel efficiency - "mechanics", nevertheless, wins. Fuel consumption (and the manufacturer recommends 95th gasoline) with manual transmission will be 6.5 liters per 100 km in "mixed" mode (8.4 - "in the city" or 5.3 - "on the highway"), and with "automatic" fuel consumption will increase to 7.6 liters "on average" (10.4 in the urban cycle or 5.9 on the highway).

Design features

The second "release" of the Chevrolet Cobalt is built on the international GM Gamma bogie with a transversely placed motor and extensive use of high-strength grades of steel in the structural body structure. The car is equipped with independent suspension with MacPherson struts at the front, and a semi-independent system with a twisting beam at the rear.

The sedan uses rack and pinion steering with hydraulic booster. The front wheels of the four-door are equipped with ventilated disc brakes, and the rear wheels are equipped with simpler drum devices.
