Volkswagen Caddy is a front- or all-wheel drive compact van belonging to the category of so-called "vehicles for active leisure", which combines a laconic design, practical and functional interior, as well as modern technical and technological "stuffing" ... This "German" is addressed to those people who want a truly versatile vehicle that can be both a “family wagon with increased capacity” and a “commercial vehicle”.

At a special event in the German city of Dusseldorf, held on February 21, 2020, Volkswagen held a loud presentation of the Caddy heel of the next, fifth in a row, generation.

Compared to its predecessor, the car has seriously changed in appearance, while retaining its recognizable shape, "moved" to a new modular platform, slightly enlarged in size, received a new interior and expanded its functionality with the widest set of modern "gadgets".

Outside, the "fifth" Volkswagen Caddy looks attractive, modern, harmonious and laconic - a formidable front end with frowned blocks of LED headlights, a narrow radiator grille and a massive bumper, a characteristic silhouette with a short sloping hood, a smoothly sloping roof line and an expressive texture of the sidewalls, a sheer feed with double doors trunk lid, vertically oriented lights and a neat bumper.

The length of the fifth generation Volkswagen Caddy is 4501 mm, its height reaches 1797 mm, and its width is ~ 1850 mm. The distance between the wheelsets extends for the compact MPV by 2755 mm, and its ground clearance is 160 mm.

Interior

Inside, the car meets its inhabitants with a beautiful, stylish and solid design, completely devoid of utility, and the main attention here is drawn to the intricate front panel with an inscribed "digital cockpit": a virtual instrument panel with a 10.25-inch display is located right in front of the driver, and to the right of it side - touchscreen display of the multimedia complex with a diagonal of 6.5 or 10 inches. Well, a relief multi-steering wheel with a rim slightly truncated at the bottom and a “microclimate” sensor control unit successfully complement the picture.

True, such an entourage is inherent in "top-end" performances, while in the available versions everything will be noticeably simpler.

The interior of the fifth generation Volkswagen Caddy has a five-seat layout by default, but as an option it can be equipped with two additional seats that can accommodate even adult passengers. In any case, front riders rely on ergonomically profiled chairs with a large number of adjustments, and a comfortable sofa is located on the second row.

With seven seats for luggage, the car has a very small compartment (although its exact volume has not yet been disclosed). The second row seats are both folded and completely dismantled - in the second case, the "hold" capacity exceeds 3 cubic meters.

Specifications

A wide range of power units is announced for the fifth generation Volkswagen Caddy:

  • Diesel versions of the compact van are "armed" with a 2.0-liter TDI turbocharged engine, dual fuel injection and 16-valve timing, depending on the version generating from 75 to 122 horsepower.
  • Under the hood of the petrol modification there is a 1.5-liter inline-four TSI with a turbocharger, direct power supply, 16 valves and variable valve timing, producing 116 hp.

The engines are combined with a 6-speed "mechanics" or 7-band "robot" DSG with two clutches, as well as driving wheels on the front axle, but for the most powerful diesel and gasoline unit, an all-wheel drive transmission with a multi-plate rear axle clutch is offered as an option.

Design features

The fifth "release" of the Volkswagen Caddy is built on a modular MQB platform with a transversely oriented engine and a monocoque body, in the power structure of which high-strength steel types are widely used.

On the front axle of the car, an independent suspension of the MacPherson type is mounted, and on the rear there is a dependent system suspended by means of steel springs (in both cases - with anti-roll bars).

In the "base" compact MPV can boast of rack and pinion steering with an electromechanical amplifier. Disc brakes (ventilated at the front) are used on all wheels of the car, working in conjunction with various electronic assistants.

Options and prices

In Europe, sales of the fifth generation Volkswagen Caddy will begin in the first half of 2020, and the car should reach the Russian market in early 2021. The configurations with prices have not yet been announced, but the new compact MPV will obviously be more expensive than its predecessor, for which they are now asking in our country from ~ 1.5 million rubles.

As for the equipment, here the car is not inferior to other modern cars: front and side airbags, full LED optics, panoramic roof, all-round cameras, media center with a 6.5 or 10-inch screen, virtual instrument cluster, dual-zone climate control, keyless entry and much more.
