At the Frankfurt Motor Show in September 2011, Volkswagen held a world presentation of a three-door urban compact called up !, which replaced the Brazilian-origin Fox model, and six months later, the five-door version debuted at a bride show in Geneva.

In March 2016, again in Switzerland, an updated version of the small car appeared to the world, which looked prettier in appearance, transformed inside, acquired "adult" equipment and received a new turbo engine.

Looks Volkswagen up! both funny and very strict. The "face" of the car is decorated with a wide smile in the front bumper and recognizable by the "older" models of the brand of lighting, but the sheer stern is more like a cabinet with an integrated oven. In profile, the city car demonstrates a fairly well-defined shape with a sloping hood, short overhangs and a large glass area.

"Up" is a hatchback of the European A-class with a three- or five-door body, and its length is 3540 mm, height - 1478 mm, width - 1641 mm. The size of the wheelbase of the German small car is 2420 mm, and the clearance under the "belly" is 144 mm.

In the interior of Volkswagen up! the German brand is unmistakable, even if you cover the nameplate on the stylish steering wheel, which is truncated in a sporty way at the bottom. In general, the inside of the city car looks nice and pleasant, but somewhat austere - the front panel in the central part is crowned with unremarkable air conditioning and audio system units, and the instrument cluster with a large speedometer is simple and informative. You will not find soft plastic in the car, but the workmanship is at a decent level.

Despite its compact size, Apa's décor is surprisingly spacious. The front seats of the hatch are attractive in appearance and well profiled in practice, and the rear seats are quite suitable for short trips of a couple of adult passengers.

The trunk of the Volkswagen up! very roomy: in a four-seater configuration, its volume is 251 liters, and in a two-seater - 951 liters. The double bottom of the "hold" makes it possible to obtain a flat platform when the "gallery" is folded, and a repair kit is based underground (a "spare wheel" is available as an option).

Specifications. Under the hood of the German small car, three units are installed to choose from - two of them are gasoline, and one is capable of running on natural gas.

  • The first engine is an all-aluminum 1.0-liter AE211 "triplet" equipped with multipoint injection, intake phase shifters and individual ignition coils. Depending on the settings of the control program, the "atmospheric" develops 60 or 75 horsepower (at 5000 or 6200 rpm, respectively) and 95 Nm of peak thrust at 3000-4300 rpm in both cases.
It is equipped with 5-speed "mechanics" or "robot" and front-wheel drive, eventually accelerating the car to 100 km / h in 13.2-15.3 seconds and accelerating to a maximum of 160-171 km / h. Passport "appetite" - 4.4-4.7 liters in a combined cycle.
  • It is followed in the hierarchy by the same three-cylinder engine, but "squeezed" to a compression ratio of 11.5: 1 and running on natural gas, the output of which is 68 "mares" at 6200 rpm and 90 Nm of torque at 3000 rpm minute.
He is paired with "mechanics" for five gears. Such a city car exchanges the first "hundred" after 16.3 seconds, peak accelerates to 164 km / h and consumes 2.9 kilograms (or 4.4 cubic meters) of gas in mixed mode.
  • The top of the power palette is "occupied" by a 1.0-liter TSI turbo engine with direct power, releasing 90 "heads" and 160 Nm of available potential.
In a storage compartment with a mechanical transmission, it makes the German "baby" very nimble: it takes 10 seconds to sprint from standstill to 100 km / h, and the maximum speed is 185 km / h. Fuel consumption - 4.4 liters per "hundred" in mixed conditions.

Volkswagen up! a front-wheel drive platform NWS (New Small Family, or in other words - PQ12) is used with a transversely based motor and a monocoque body, which is 75% high-strength steels. The suspension architecture of the car is familiar to the subcompact class - independent MacPherson struts at the front and a semi-independent torsion beam at the rear.

The steering system of a compact rack and pinion with an electromechanical amplifier, which is included in the work only when necessary. The hatch has 280mm ventilated disc brakes on the front axle, and 228mm drum units on the rear (plus ABS).

Options and prices. On the European market (or to be more precise, in Germany) the pre-reform version of Volkswagen up! is offered at a price of 9,975 euros, and the updated version will be on sale in the summer of 2016, and its base price will remain unchanged. The standard equipment of the small car is equipped with 14-inch steel rims, tire pressure monitoring system, fabric trim, two airbags, ABS, ASR, EBV, MSR, power steering and audio preparation.
In the "top" version, among other things, there are 17-inch alloy wheels, fog lights, power windows, leather steering wheel, air conditioning, standard "music" with two speakers, daytime running lights and other modern equipment.
